Martin Luther King Jr. interpretation

”This evening I would like to use this lofty and historic platform to discuss what appears to me to be the most pressing problem confronting mankind today. Modern man has brought this whole world to an awe-inspiring threshold of the future. He has reached new and astonishing peaks of scientific success. He has produced machines that think and instruments that peer into the unfathomable ranges of interstellar space. He has built gigantic bridges to span the seas and gargantuan buildings to kiss the skies. His airplanes and spaceships have dwarfed distance, placed time in chains, and carved highways through the stratosphere. This is a dazzling picture of modern man’s scientific and technological progress.
Yet, in spite of these spectacular strides in science and technology, and still unlimited ones to come, something basic is missing. There is a sort of poverty of the spirit which stands in glaring contrast to our scientific and technological abundance. The richer we have become materially, the poorer we have become morally and spiritually. We have learned to fly the air like birds and swim the sea like fish, but we have not learned the simple art of living together as brothers.-Martin Luther King Jr.”

Prompt 1:

Write a brief essay explaining your understanding of Dr. King’s message. Support your ideas with evidence from the speech. Include an analysis of how these issues have evolved since Dr. King delivered this address over 40 years ago.

Martin Luther King Jr. was pointing out that we have airplanes, space shuttles, skyscrapers, cars, even computers that could calculate almost any problem and yet there was still racism, white only stores, buses that you had to give up your seat to a white person if you were black. Basically even though we had abolished slavery we were still treating black people like crap and he pointed out that so many technological advancements had happened just imagine how many more will be accomplished if every one was treated equal and if not improvements to the others. Motorcycles back then were not even dreamed about, even regular cars were prone to breaking down and they did not get very good gas mileage. Now, at this day and age there are flip-phones more powerful than the computers, racism is now looked down upon, and we are able to do things that he couldn’t dream of. I am certain that if he could see what man has accomplished he would be more than proud, I think he would cry in joy. Please, who ever reads this put your interpretation in the comments.

The Bean Eaters

“They eat beans mostly, this old yellow pair.
Dinner is a casual affair.
Plain chipware on a plain and creaking wood,
Tin flatware.

Two who are Mostly Good.
Two who have lived their day,
But keep on putting on their clothes
And putting things away.

And remembering . . .
Remembering, with twinklings and twinges,
As they lean over the beans in their rented back room that
is full of beads and receipts and dolls and cloths,
tobacco crumbs, vases and fringes.” The Bean Eaters By Gwendolyn Brooks.

The elderly couple mainly eats beans because that’s all they can afford, They even have to rent a single room. Although the elderly couple is old they have something precious, Memories of when they were young. But now are too old and poor to do what they used to
do. They also starve regularly and relish their food, their cans of beans. I am certain that they can’t even heat their beans. The elderly couple eats their food with tin silverware the only cheaper metal to eat with is brass.

Angel Island’s history preservation

The Asian immigrants who were held against their will on angel island and were counted which does not make immigrants feel welcome and makes them want to go to their homeland, Asia. I think that they should have been given a chance to return by offering free tickets after a short time of waiting. Also, they should have been given comfortable sleeping quarters instead of what they were given. So yes I do think that their history should be recorded and stored or else America will go back to that point, with the Asian immigrants in it. To be honest we would probably even make a law that would nullify their citizenship.

Love for reading

My dad and I love books and have a whole bookshelf full of them I usually read books he recommends to me but sometimes I read things myself. I tend to like the young adult section and the adult section. Once you get me onto a series I like I will want to read them all and most of the times I do. We usually don’t have the money for books so I get even more books from dad. There are several times I have gotten a new book because I have a literature class. I love my dad and I am certain he loves me too but I am starting to feel bad that dad does not thinking that he is not a good father and I feel at fault.

Invisible strength

I cannot identify a time I have displayed invisible strength so it must be very invisible, even to me, the user but it must be very valuable and precious. I know people who have and displayed invisible strength like my father, cousin and mother. The only time I display invisible strength it ends badly for me or I hurt someone’s feelings but, I do know times I have displayed invisible strength that have hurt me and everyone around me. For instance I got into an argument with Cody and eventually he went inside and I did not know why he went in.

Once upon a time a hero wanted some adventure but he thought all the interesting adventures were already done until the town crier called all of the bravest heroes of the land including him and told him about an area and villain that wasn’t there a day ago. He told stories of heroes who went and came back with no clue why they went or where but he went there himself and there was certainly an dark ominous mountain. So with all of the lower heroes burned out he had to call the higher heroes till he got to the Great Eight. They are the heroes of Bravery, Patience, Team Cooperation, Compassion, Strength, Life, Intelligence and Magick. So they formed a team called the Great Eight which went around stopping villains until there were no more, then they disbanded. Bravery decided to do the scariest things to see if there was somewhere that his bravery ended and he found it after there was nothing he needed to be brave about. Patience went to an asylum for becoming catatonic after waiting too long and not responding to anything.
